New Publication Outlines Ethical and Regulatory Themes for Gene Editing and Precision Medicine

Members of the Precision Health Alliance authored a new publication stressing the need for intensely focused collaboration across the scientific community to ensure that gene therapies are patient-centered, safe, and ethical.
The peer-reviewed article, “Ethical and Regulatory Considerations for Developing Gene Therapies Involving Genome Editing” was published in Human Gene Therapy and summarizes the themes from a multidisciplinary workshop that include: Objectives (treatment, risk reduction, and enhancement) for the gene therapy;
- Competing interests of safety, equity, and desire for research efficiencies;
- Unique aspects of gene editing related to rare and ultrarare genetic conditions;
- Considerations in the pediatric population;
- Regulatory requirements and ethics oversight;
- Challenges with long-term follow-up and data sharing; and
- Communication.
As the field of gene therapy rapidly evolves, the authors assert that its success and ethical implementation depend on three linked commitments: protecting patients while responsibly advancing science, embedding equity at every stage from study design to health care delivery, and building harmonized governance systems.
The Precision Health Alliance is a consortium sponsored and coordinated by The Duke Clinical Research Institute (DCRI) in partnership with Beam Therapeutics, CRISPR Therapeutics, Intellia Therapeutics and AskBio. Authored by Precision Health Alliance partners, the article represents collaboration across academic and industry organizations.
"The ability to bring together multidisciplinary expertise across clinical research, translational science, biostatistics, and regulatory strategy to the global research community serves as a model for achieving this goal of careful collaboration," DCRI Executive Director and Precision Health Alliance steering committee chair, Adrian Hernandez, MD, MHS, said.
The Alliance aims to engage a variety of stakeholder groups, including patients, clinicians, health care leaders, health care systems, life science companies, regulatory experts, and bioethicists. The article stressed that this collaborative model is increasingly essential as precision medicine initiatives grow in complexity and scale and companies encounter similar challenges in new therapeutic areas or populations.
DCRI Collaborates with Biotechnology Partners to Promote Innovation in Precision Health

The Precision Health Alliance, a new consortium co-founded by the Duke Clinical Research Institute (DCRI), Beam Therapeutics, CRISPR Therapeutics, Intellia Therapeutics, and Verve Therapeutics, launched today to promote innovation in precision health and medicine. Additional academic and industry collaborators are expected to join the alliance in the future.
The goal of the Precision Health Alliance is to understand and address the challenges facing the field of precision health, which refers to personalized health care based on individual genetic factors.
The alliance will serve as a platform for innovative research related to gene therapy, aiming to better understand patient preferences, ethical considerations, and regulatory requirements and challenges. The alliance also seeks to inform and shape future policy and payment models that could help accelerate and expand access for patients.
“We believe that precision health has the potential to transform health care, and we are committed to working with our partners to make this vision a reality,” said Adrian Hernandez, M.D., executive committee chair of the Precision Health Alliance and executive director of the DCRI.
The Precision Health Alliance will focus on:
- Developing a dissemination and implementation platform for real-time insights and streamlined study conduct
- Leveraging real-world data sources to alleviate research burden and improve follow-up
- Establishing and supporting effective, patient-friendly treatment pathways
- Developing new ethical and regulatory frameworks for precision health
- Engaging with patients and the public to understand perceptions and preferences as well as build trust in precision health
Founding partners in the alliance from across the biotechnology industry expressed their enthusiasm for the transformational potential of the collaboration:
